The Shelby Cobra is the ultimate example of the 'hairy chested', long bonnet, 'big banger' V8 roadster. The Shelby Cobra originated from the slick and very beautifully designed AC ACE. The AC Ace fitted with 120 bhp. Bristol six cylinder engine was a tough competitor on the European and American race tracks. The AC Ace even reached a 10th place overall and a second in class during the 1957 Le Mans race. In the year 1961 AC decided the old pre war designed Bristol engine should be succeeded by something more modern and powerful. They gave the ACE a 2.6 Litre Ford Zephyr engine which did not really improve 'the punch' since the power output was about the same as the old Bristol motor. In September 1961 AC received a letter from the American racing driver and constructor Caroll Shelby who asked them if they could provide an AC ACE modified to take a Ford 260 cui V8 in it's engine bay. Since the work done to fit the Ford Zephyr V8 engine AC only had to modify some details of the chassis to take the engine. Shelby received the modified chassis in February 1962. Engine and components were fitted and testing begun. The combination of the AC chassis with real American muscle proved to be very successful. In 1963 the Shelby Cobra finished 7th overall in the Le Mans 24 hour race! The Shelby Cobra developed over the years and got more powerful as a result. After 126 Mk I (260 cubic inch - cui - 4,3 Litre) cars the Mk II 289 cui (4,7 Litre) model saw the light of day in 1963. After 528 Mk II models the ultimate Mk III 427 cui (7,0 Litre) Cobra was presented. Of this model 306 cars were built until about 1970. After that the Shelby Cobra has been built as a 'replica' by many firms. Also 'official' recreations were/are fabricated from the 1980'ies by companies who were accepted to fabricate 'continuation cars' by Caroll Shelby (Shelby Automobiles Inc.) Superformance currently is the firm building extremely high quality continuation cars approved by Caroll Shelby.
